Last Friday found us heading to the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site for Eau Claire Distillery’s annual spring seeding. We had fewer horses and people coming this year but a big plus was that Mother Nature was looking favorably on our undertaking, something she hasn’t done for a couple of years.
Saturday morning dawned crisp and sunny. After enjoying our coffee outdoors, we headed for the horses and got them groomed and harnessed. It was decided to start two lands, one for the gangplows and the other for the rest of us. It didn’t take long to get down to work and before we knew it, it was time to quit for the day and we had about seventy five per cent of the plowing finished. After spending the evening around the campfire it was time for a nightcap and then a good night’s sleep.
Sunday morning it was plenty of blue sky and sunshine again. We enjoyed a big breakfast courtesy of the Friends of the Bar U and then it was off to the field again. This time we split the crew and while half finished the plowing, the rest started to harrow and cultivate the ground that was plowed the previous day. At one o’clock we paused to partake in a parade of horse drawn equipment through the Bar U site then it was back to the field to finish plowing and harrowing and to start seeding. So what does a bunch of teamsters do to amuse themselves after the work is finished? Why they hook twelve horses to do some more harrowing of course and it was quite a sight. By seven thirty Sunday evening the seeding was finished and all the horses were put away. More camaraderie around the campfire, another night cap and another good night’s sleep.
Monday morning we were blessed with blue sky and sunshine again, Mother Nature was really playing her “A” game. There was a flurry of activity loading everything and by one-thirty everyone was headed for home. All in all it was a fantastic weekend full of good people, good horses and even better weather. Many thanks to all that attended, it wouldn’t have happened without you. Now we wait for ninety days…..
